“Jesus calls to conversion. This call is an essential part of the proclamation of the kingdom: “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent, and believe in the gospel.”
It is by faith in the Gospel and by Baptism that one renounces evil and gains salvation, that is, the forgiveness of all sins and the gift of new life.” #1497- Catechism of the Catholic Church
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the process by which interested persons become full members in the communion of the Catholic Church. The RCIA is an initial and continual call to conversion to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It is a journey of faith and participation in the life and worship of the parish community and of the wider Catholic Church.
Who is the RCIA for?
The Rite of Christian Initiation is for those who have not been baptized (catechumens). It is also for baptized Christians (candidates) who wish to live the fullness of Christian life in the Catholic Church and also for those baptized Catholics who have not received the sacraments of Holy Eucharist and/or Confirmation.
What is the process of RCIA?
The RCIA consists of four periods of conversion and discernment along with various “rites” which are celebrated with the parish community during Mass during each period.
Period of Pre-Catechumenate (Inquiry)
This is a period of inquiry and receiving answers to your initial questions. It is a time to reflect upon and be converted to the “good news” of Jesus Christ, to see the connections and reality of this “good news” in your own life. It is also a time to become acquainted with the Catholic Church and other individuals who are on the same journey of faith as are you.
Period of Catechumenate
This is a period of deeper reflection and learning about the Catholic Faith. The individual who enters this period must have an initial faith and understanding of Jesus Christ as Savior. During this period we will study the Bible as well as important topics concerning the faith. We also gather with the parish community at Sunday Mass. This period extends from the Fall until Lent.
Period of Purification and Enlightenment
This period corresponds to the time of Lent, the six weeks of preparation for Easter. It is especially a time of prayer, self-reflection and continued conversion. At the conclusion of this period, if you are ready and able to make a profession of your faith, you will be received into full communion with the Catholic Church.
Period of Mystagogy
This period is a time for you to uncover the meaning of living the fullness of the Christian life in the Catholic Church.
How long is the RCIA?
Normally the RCIA is completed in eight months to a year. However, you can take a longer period of time if you choose. You will never be pressured to make a decision you are not prepared or willing to make. Any decision to continue or discontinue the RCIA is always left to you and your decision is always respected.
What is expected of me?
Just a few things… That you take the RCIA seriously and attend each session possible so that your experience may be as enriching and fruitful as possible. And most important, that you come with a sincere and seeking heart which hungers for a deep and meaningful relationship with God.
